DEPARTMENT OF Botony

The Department of Botany has been in the forefront of teaching and research in Plant Sciences since its establishment .The original aim is to provide quality education to the educationally underprivileged students.Over the years, the Department has been able to develop one of the best infrastructures for its teaching and research programmes.

1.The Department has recently organized inauguration of botany association –gloriosa 2015 on 20-08-2015 by honorable MLA P.C.Vishnunadh .The meeting was presided over by principal of te college Dr.P.P.Chanrasekhara Pillai .Mrs Lekshmy sreekumar,Head of the department of botany delivered the welcome speech.PTA Secretary Dr V.Prakash addressed the meeting.














2.After the inaugural function , a meeting was arrangd in principals chamber to discuss the scope and potential of developing a germplasm repository iin D.B Pampa College for the long-term conservation of major plants specis of ethnobotanical interests species and their wild relatives in order to develop new varieties.In Pathanamthitta district many ethnobotanical plants have been under-represented and a comprehensive facility dedicated to their conservation and research does not currently exist..The meeting was attended by MLA P.C.Vishnunadh , Dr Jacob Thomas , Assistant Professor & Research Guide of Mar Thoma CollegeThiruvalla ,Principal Dr.P.P.Chanrasekhara Pillai , PTA Secretary and Head of the department of Economics -Dr V.Prakash and Mrs Lekshmy sreekumar,Head of the department of botany .
3.The Department acted as a catalyst in the vital scientific and educational activities by conducting seminars and symposiums. A seminar on career options for life science graduates was organized by the deparment on 20-8-2015 By famos taxonomist Dr Jacob Thomas , Assistant Professor & Research Guide of Mar Thoma CollegeThiruvalla .He is a – Life member of Indian Science Congress ,Fellow member of International Science Congress Association , Wildlife Crime Control Bureau (WCCB) Volunteer, MoEFCC, and Editor of International journal Plant and Pest Science.The sminar was attended by fully packed audience.



4 . As a part of renovation of botany garden ,the students, teaching and nonteaching staff of the department had joined hands wholeheartedly to clean the garden.



5. The uniqueness of the Department essentially lies in the fact that within the Department’s faculty, there are experts and active researchers representing almost all areas of plant sciences.The teachers accompany the student in many field visits.For assessing the environmental pollution in mannar area caused by gas stations and petrol pumps ,a field visit was conducted by mrs lekshmy sreekumar.



6.For assessing the ecological sensitivity of riparian ecosystems,a field visit was oganised to pampa river by Dr Jaimsha rani .
7. Freshers party was conducted to welcome newcomers in a friendly atmosphere. The interaction between seniors and juniors make fresher’s feel good about being part of the college .It also promoted Innovative ideas and allow students to share their knowledge and ideas with other students.



8.Under the guidance of Mrs Ajitha D.,the department is setting up a new botany library inadditon to the college library.
9. Over the years, the Department has been able to develop one of the best infrastructures for its teaching and research programmes. Two lecture halls and two laboratories provide exquisite environment to the students for their studies. Recently our principal has gifted us one more spacious room with modern amenities exclusively for the first year students of botany department.This was one of our long standing demands.
10. the department has also received fund from different funding agencies and recently we could procUre glasswares and equipments amounting toRs 35000/.
